5 Ways to Enjoy the Winter in Red River Without Hitting the Slopes

When the snow begins to fall in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, winter fun begins! And it isn’t only found on the ski slopes. Enjoy time trekking through the snow, building a snowman, or enjoying the charm of downtown Red River. No matter how you plan to enjoy the winter months, Red River is a perfect place to enjoy life in the mountains.

1. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a low-impact sport that invites you to get out into the natural beauty of the Red River area! First, you will need to be prepared with waterproof shoes, warm clothes, a pair of snowshoes of course, and poles if you so desire. Next, find a hiking trail that suits your needs in either the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area or on a trail in Carson National Forest. Make sure to find a marked trail or bring a map as trails can be difficult to follow when covered in snow!

2. Sledding

Pick up a sled or bring one of your own to enjoy sledding in Red River! Any hill will do to bring you the family fun you desire but the best places for free winter fun in town are the hills located next to the Public Library, Mallette Park, and St. Edwin’s Catholic Church. More winter fun can be had making snow angels or building a snowman! Bundle up and heat out for a day of fun in the snow

3. Cross Country Skiing

Looking to get on skis without the crowds of the resorts? Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area offers spanning cross country ski trails that boast stunning meadow and forest views. Bundle up before your traverse through the gorgeous terrain and enjoy a day out in the snow!

4. Shop on Red River’s Main Street

Take a break from the slopes and pick up a shopping bag! Main Street is lined with unique boutiques and shops offering clothing, jewelry, souvenirs, ski gear, and more. Warm up on a winter day by exploring the shops and picking up a souvenir or gifts for your friends and family. Shop in the Main Street Mercantile, grab some outdoor gear at Crazy Mountain Sports, or grab something sweet at the Candy Crate!

5. Stay in and Order Out

Stay cozy at home and dig into delicious meals from local Red River restaurants! Ordering carry-out is an ideal way to enjoy local cuisine while enjoying a night at your home-away-from-home. Order appetizers, burgers, and brews from the Red River Brewing CompanyShotgun Willie’s offers loaded baked potatoes, southern-style platters, and tasty sides like chili cheese fries. And of course, pizza is a classic carry-out meal that satisfies the whole family. Anchovies Pizzeria is the perfect place to order in dinner and enjoy a pizza and game night at home!
